Diraq engineer secures fellowship
27 April 2023 by Diraq

In a recent announcement, Dr. Kok Wai Chan, a Fabrication and Process Engineer at Diraq, has secured a prestigious Australian Research Council (ARC) Mid-Career Industry Fellowship. This recognition underscores the impressive efforts undertaken by Diraq in the pursuit of a full-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer. The fellowship will bolster Diraq with $764,472 in non-dilutive funding to advance Dr. Chan's engineering research.

Dr. Chan's funded project aims to couple qubits on different chips fabricated in the same package using flip chip technology, with the goal of demonstrating ways to scale up Diraq's quantum processing units. The competitive nature of this fellowship is evidenced by the 8% success rate, with only 25 out of 314 applications receiving funding. Dr. Chan's work is crucial to Diraq's overarching ambition of fabricating quantum computing chips capable of holding billions of qubits.

The ARC fellowship is a significant win for both Diraq and the wider Australian quantum industry as the government continues to show support for quantum technologies. Just last month, the AU$15 billion National Reconstruction Fund (NRF) was established in law with AU$1 billion dedicated to a critical technologies fund - of which quantum technologies are a core focus.

Congratulations to Dr. Kok Wai Chan on this accomplishment, which further cements Diraq's status as a leader in the quantum computing field.
